The Game Club is a new club that was created on campus at the beginning of this semester.

The club meets to play video games competitively and compete in online tournaments. As of now they are currently participating in a League Of Legends tournament in the OC High School Esports League.

In their tournament they will go against other teams from schools in Orange County. Games are set up to be a best of three and average game length of a League Of Legends game is 30 minutes, but sometimes take as long as 1 hour or as short as 10 minutes.

Before their matches they discuss strategies for defeating the opponent just like a normal sports team and even “practice mondays and wednesdays,” says senior Ryan Apides. During their match they talk to each other and work together to execute their strategies.

The club hopes to be made into an actual sport offered during sixth period here at Esperanza. Junior Jeffrey Gathright says, “Esports is a growing industry, so as soon as you can get people experienced in it, it lets them know what their options are.”

Even before becoming a sport the club is intended to be financed “like any sport we need to get equipment,” says club adviser Brent Willis.

Willis says, “Competitive gaming is a real thing, and it is incredibly lucrative.”
