Dance: The Perfect Combo of Art and Athletics

The beginning dance class is a class for many students to participate and experience the class of dance without being part of the dance team. Most students really enjoy the class because of how much they learn. Students learn from different styles of dances to the history of dance as well as how much preparation goes into being a dancer.

To be in this fine art class, there is no requirement to sign up. This class allows many students to learn about dance as well as the history of the class. Many students also enjoy this class because of the light workload.

“There is not really any homework in the class, “ said sophomore Deziree Melendez.

Each day in the class is different, to learning different types of dances to understanding the history of it all.

“Everyday in this class is different, we do warm ups, dress out and talk about the class itself,” said the director of the dance class, Sue Gehringer, who has taught for 26 years.

“I danced all my life since I was 3, I didn’t start off as a dance teacher, I danced in college with a scholarship and  went into business at first.” said Gehringer.

Many students have found the class super fun because they learn  many different elements and don’t have a lot of requirements to be in the class.

Melendez said,” The most valuable lesson I have learned so far in this class is that it’s always good to try new things.”

This class will also benefit you by including P.E. credits, if you do not participate in a sport at this school or do not want to take the P.E. class, this class will give you credits.

The grading style in the class is based off what activities you perform  in the class.

Melendez said,” We usually get graded on our routines we do every month or two or we do vocab quizzes.”

You do not have to dress out everyday, on the days you don’t dress out you are taught about the history.

“In this class I look for students who are willing to try something new,” said Gehringer.

The most beneficial thing a student can walk away from in this class is the appreciation of dance in general and hard work.

Gehringer works really hard. Students have said her hard work and dedication shows throughout her class.

“ I work 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and many days are different depending on what we are doing each day”.

Gehringer explained how over the years not only has she been teaching many students about all the styles of dance, but also her students have taught her many things .

In this class students  will be taught many new skills about dance and the class, in general. Many students enjoy the class and continue with it throughout the years of their schooling.
