Valentines Desserts and How To Make Them

It’s almost Valentine’s day, and what’s a better way to celebrate than to make some cute and festive treats. Whether you have never baked before, or you are just looking for some new ideas, these fun desserts are super easy to make. From cakes and cookies, to strawberries and truffles, there is something for everyone. 

Chocolate Heart Cake with Vanilla Buttercream

This cute cake is heart shaped and sure to be baked with lots of love. It is super fun to make with friends and super easy too. The perfect mix of cake and frosting makes this cake just as tasty as it is pretty to look at.

Recipe:

Chocolate Cake~

  • 4 cups all purpose flour
  • ¾ cup cocoa powder
  • 1½ tsp baking powder
  • 2 cups white sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water

To make the cake:

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F and grease 2 9in cake pans
  2. To a large bowl add flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, sugar, and salt. Mix together.
  3. Add eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla then mix.
  4. Add the boiling water then mix.
  5. Pour batter into pans.
  6. Bake for 35 minutes, take out of the oven, and then cool for 10 minutes before removing from the pans. Wait until completely cooled before frosting.

Vanilla Buttercream Frosting~

  • 1 cup softened butter (2  sticks)
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 2-3 tbsp milk
  • 4 cups powdered sugar (1lb)
  • food coloring *optional*

To make the frosting:

  1. To a medium bowl add butter and vanilla and mix with an electric mixer till light and fluffy (about 3 minutes).
  2. Add in powdered sugar and mix till combined, scraping down the sides as you mix.
  3. Slowly mix in the milk until you achieve the desired consistency. Add in food coloring if wanted.

To assemble the cake: 

  1. Put the frosting in a piping bag and pipe a small amount onto the first cake layer. Place the second layer on top.
  2. Now, using food coloring and different piping tips, pipe flowers and swirls. Keep piping until the cake top is full.

Chocolate Covered Strawberries

This classic Valentine’s Day dessert is a super popular gift to give to your valentine. However, you can make these berries for yourself and enjoy it just as much. 

What you need:

  • Strawberries
  • Any kind of chocolate (white, milk, or dark)
  • Parchment paper
  • Sprinkles *optional*
  1. Wash your strawberries and dry them completely. 
  2. Place chocolate in a small bowl and microwave for 30 second intervals checking and stirring in between until fully melted. Add food coloring if wanted.
  3. Take the strawberries and slowly dip them into the chocolate and set them onto a sheet of parchment paper.
  4. Sprinkle with sprinkles or drizzle more melted chocolate *optional*
  5. Chill for 30 minutes.

Red Velvet M&M Cake Mix Cookies

For a simpler option, opt for these cake mix cookies. Using only 4 ingredients, you can get these perfect red velvet cookies in under 30 minutes. 

What you need:

  • Red Velvet Cake Mix
  • ¾ cup M&M’s (valentines mix preferably)
  • 2 eggs
  • ⅓ cup vegetable oil
  • bowl
  • spatula 
  • baking sheet 
  • parchment paper
  1. Empty cake mix into a medium sized bowl. Add eggs and vegetable oil. Mix until combined. 
  2. Add in M&M’s and mix. 
  3. Scoop 2 tbsp dough and roll into balls. Place onto your baking sheet. 
  4. Bake at 375 for 8-10 minutes.
  5. Remove from the oven and let sit for 5 minutes as they come out of the oven very fluffy. Let them cool completely before enjoying.
