Jessica’s Holiday Traditions

Christmas is coming up very shortly and families all over the world are getting ready for this beautiful holiday. Every family has their own different traditions, not just for Christmas, but for other holidays as well. Senior Jessica Morfin’s traditions that she shares with her family are not only unique, but incredibly special to her.

Morfin perks up at the thought of being with her grandma on Christmas Eve, “I think it’s genuinely more fun to be with my grandma and my mom’s side of the family. It’s a little less hectic and I really get to spend time with them”. Her mom’s side of the family is smaller, unlike her dad’s chaotic side of the family.

“My grandma is a horrible cook, so I always tend to help out,” Morfin chuckles. Her grandma tries her hardest to cook for the family and make sure that everyone is happy. She usually makes lasagna along with Morfin’s favorite dessert, green gush. This unique dessert is a pistachio mix and her grandma has been making this for the family for several years.

Morfin’s family traditions used to be different up until her parents got divorced. When she was 7 years old, she had to change her regular holiday routine into something completely different. “Now that they are separated, I spend time with my mom in the morning of Christmas, and then go to my dad’s house at night” Morfin says with acceptance. Having divorced parents during this season can really be difficult for a kid, but eventually Morfin learned to deal with it.

Morfin also feels excited when asked about her favorite holiday, Halloween. “I love it [Halloween] so much! There is so much you can do. You can go to haunted houses, get candy, and dress up. I always go all out for my costume”. Although Morfin’s family really doesn’t do a tradition for Halloween, she says that she might start one when she has a family of her own.

When asked about any other traditions, Morfin quickly jumps to Thanksgiving. “We usually have different food every year. Sometimes it’s tacos, other times it will be italian food. We all get together at my grandma’s house and have a great time”. Having different food on Thanksgiving isn’t your basic American style meal. Morfin’s tradition is unique and something that she really enjoys about her family.

“When I’m older I’ll probably have a fun Thanksgiving with different kinds of food, but the day before. Then on actual Thanksgiving I’ll have it normal style.” Morfin states. She loves to think about the future and the plans she is going to have with her own family. Morfin really adores the idea of starting new traditions and passing them down to her own children.

Having different traditions for each holiday is something that Morfin really appreciates. She wouldn’t want it to be any other way. From 7 years old to 17 years old, Morfin has been doing the same type of traditions with her family. She cannot wait until she can continue them with her own family and pass them down from generation to generation.
