Summer vacation is coming up soon, and a great way to spend it is helping out a non-profit organization. It doesn’t have to be solely for gaining community service hours, but it can also be a fun and entertaining activity.

Students can pick up sign-up sheets and flyers on the wall in the attendance office and choose from a wide selection of organizations. There are also temporary opportunities where a service will end on a certain day and hour.

Cheyenne Beever in the attendance office helps put up the sign up sheets and flyers for all of the community service opportunities. If anyone has any questions, she is a good source to talk to.

Beever said, “There are currently 98 ongoing opportunities that last all year and students can go to them in the summer as well.”

The wall is to help create inspiration for students who can’t think of any places to volunteer. There are different categories for different organizations, like government volunteer work, such as parks and recreation.

It’s easy to sign up, just pick up a phone and call the organization and ask if they are taking any more volunteers.

Sarah Sarmiento, senior, volunteers at a clubhouse, where she and her mom would set up a table with fun and creative crafts for children. Sarmiento said,“I got to see the kids have fun and it helped me give back to my community.” Sarmiento did crafts with kids to complete her hours and volunteered every weekend.

Jessica Parker, senior,  has completed more than 1,500 hours since her freshman year.

Parker has been volunteering for activities like playing basketball with special needs students, being a teacher’s assistant, cooking for the homeless and also an organization called “Learn from Morgan.”

Parker said, “Learn from Morgan is a CPR class that me and my friends tried implementing in health classes. We learn about the human body in health class, shouldn’t we learn about CPR too?”

Some advice that Parker gave to student volunteers.“Go to an event instead of going to the mall. Find a free event and volunteer, it can be fun, it’s free and entertaining.”
