Beat Yorba Linda Spirit Week Bonds Aztecs
Every year Esperanza comes together to support the football team as they play the Yorba Linda Mustangs. Rivalry week is always exciting and this year Aztecs really showed their school spirit despite the disappointing loss in the game.
ASB President Thomas Rhim said, “I think our school was superior in every way possible when it came to spirit. Despite the score of the game, our student section continued to cheer on the top of their lungs and you can’t get better spirit than that.”
During the week students participated in dress up days like black out, red out, and Aztec gear. The rally took place Friday before the game where cheer, dance and drumline performed to get the student body excited before the football and water polo games. On Wednesday, it was Chick-fil-A night where students dined there to support Esperanza. This was also a contest against Yorba Linda High School. ASB Director Meghann Lukach said, “Students participated in everything we had to offer and did a great job the whole week.”
In addition to activities, a canned food drive also took place against the Mustangs. Despite losing to Yorba Linda, Aztecs donated over 40,000 cans to help the Second Harvest Food Bank.
Even though the Aztecs lost the football game, both the water polo team and the women’s volleyball team beat the Mustangs that week.
Beat Yorba Linda Spirit Week showed how the student body can come together to support the school. “It just felt as though students this year were and still are proud to be an Aztec. Yes, we wanted to beat Yorba Linda at everything, but students showed true school spirit,” said Lukach.
The football game is only the beginning for rivalry games against the Mustangs. Rhim said that he hopes the student body will bring this kind of spirit to every rivalry game for all sports teams. He said, “This is only the beginning.”
