Ed Sheeran’s “Divide” Review
After a three year hiatus, Ed Sheeran has come back with a bang with his new album ‘Divide.’
Sheeran’s latest album brings back his acoustic pop sound. Sheeran combines his lyrics with some new backbeats to create the album we have all been waiting for.
Sheeran’s first single, ‘Shape Of You’ has become an immediate top hit, soaring up the iTunes charts. It is backed by Sheeran’s guitar playing with EDM beats. This shows Sheeran’s versatility. He is able to both play acoustically slow songs, but also create great dance and fast tracks.
Sheeran’s second single, ‘Castle On a Hill’ is different from ‘Shape of You’ as it is less poppy and tells more of a story. It is much slower and sounds more like a U2 song than an Ed Sheeran song.
Also on the album, ‘Galway Girl’ shows off Sheeran’s roots by bringing in an Irish fiddle on the chorus that creates an uplifting track. This goes along with the lyrics about the girl that plays the fiddle. Sheeran’s song, ‘Dive’ shows us a gritty side to his voice, a side he often doesn’t show.
In ‘New Man,’ Sheeran brings a comical break-up song where he explains just about the most self-centered boyfriend ever – “ He got his eyebrows plucked and his arsehole bleached… Tribal tattoos he don’t know what they mean. But I heard he makes you happy so that’s fine by me.” This differs greatly from his original style of sappy break up songs that leave a tear rolling down your cheek.
Sheeran also pays tribute to his grandmother in a touching ballad, ‘Flowers in the Supermarket’. The song is sure to leave you sad and thinking about memories from your own life or someone you yourself have lost.
This album combines Sheeran’s new sounds along with some of his old sound that made him famous to begin with. Let’s just hope it does not take another three years for Sheeran to bless our ears with more of his music.
