Social media negatively affects social interaction because it increases the risks of mental health struggles, bullying, and feelings of feeling left out, and loneliness.
It is controversial whether social media is as harmful as many believe. Apps like Instagram, TikTok, and Twitter have been occupying the time of many teens and adults. Because many people go above the recommended amount of screen time, people are getting less exercise, and socialization than they should be getting.
Lawrence Robinson, editor of @Help Guide, a nonprofit informing others on wellness and mental health, believes social media leads people into mental illness. “Multiple studies have found a strong link between heavy social media and an increased risk for depression, anxiety, loneliness, self-harm, and even suicidal thoughts,” said Robertson
As well as mental illness, social media also causes bullying in 10 percent of teen users. This is a large percentage of bullying that comes solely from social media.
Robinson explains, “Social media platforms such as Twitter can be hotspots for spreading hurtful rumors, lies, and abuse that can leave lasting emotional scars.” Because of social media, many teens feel they can write whatever they want to others, and get away with it, bullying is common on many platforms. Limiting social media, and reducing bullying, will lead to happier teenagers and adults.
As well as bullying, social media also occupies an unhealthy amount of many people’s time, therefore reducing productivity. People are spending more time scrolling endlessly on TikTok, and they limit time spent with loved ones, or exercising.
Robinson states, “Using social media more often, though, increases FOMO and feelings of inadequacy, dissatisfaction, and isolation.” Because many people are on social media too much, this makes them feel left out, and alone. When a person does not go outside to exercise and socialize, it is normal to feel life is inadequate. Even though social media can allow people to view and communicate with friends online, the negative effect it has on mental health is more important.
Social media is designed to keep our attention and may seem very harmless, however it’s bad. We should be mindful of the time we spend on social media for the best of our relationships, and mental health.
