Technology allows people to do many things and also be more connected than ever, but comes at a price. This price can either impact you in a good way or a bad way depending on how you spend your time with it. Overuse of mobile devices have been leading to eyestrain, difficulty focusing on other tasks, and even depression. While some forms of technology may have made positive changes in the world, there is evidence for the negative effects of technology and its overuse as well. The overuse of it may have a more significant impact on developing children and teenagers. “I fear the day when technology overlaps with our humanity. The world will only have a generation of idiots.” Albert Einstein
Many people also may have poor posture due to how they are when using a device. Over time it may lead to musculoskeletal issues because of the unnecessary amount of pressure on the spine and neck. A 5-year study in the journal Applied Ergonomics found an association between texting on a mobile phone and neck or upper back pain in young adults. “The best posture is the one that is constantly changing. If you aren’t finding movement variability in your daily life, you better find it with your training.” – Eric Cress
Some other negative effects it can have on you are sleep problems, reduced physical activity, and anxiety. In addition, to avoid the potential impact of blue light on the brain, people can stop using electronic devices that emit blue light in the hour or two before bedtime. Gentle activities to wind down with instead, such as reading a book, doing gentle stretches, or taking a bath, are alternatives. “Technology improves the lives of people who can avoid being dominated by it and forced into debilitating addictions to it.” – Frank Kaufman
Technology can have some good and negative effects, but you must always know what you are getting yourself into or you will be a slave of it. It’s nice to have a device you can carry around that knows the knowledge of anything you could imagine, but there are issues that come along with it as well.“The advance of technology is based on making it fit in so that you don’t really even notice it, so it’s part of everyday life.” – Bill Gates
