Vogue’s March Cover Slammed
Vogue’s March cover celebrates “the modern American woman” by featuring models of different ethnicities, skin tones and body types. Despite the intentions, it has recently been caught under fire for not being as diverse as initially stated.
The cover features Gigi Hadid, Kendall Jenner, Ashley Graham, Vittoria Ceretti, Imaan Hammam, Adwoa Aboah and Liu Wen stated CNN. The magazine’s title is called “Modern American Women”.
The cover has been criticized because of the lack of racial diversity and including mainly lighter skin color. Users on Twitter and in the news have also commented on Graham being the only plus size model. Following Graham on the cover, Vogue has been accused of altering Hadid’s hand on the cover to cover Graham’s stomach, stated Cosmopolitan.
In the March issue, Graham reminds readers, “Sixty-seven percent of the women in America wear a size 14 or larger… Maybe you could ignore those consumers before, but now, thanks to social media, they’re making their voices heard… What they want is to be visible,” according to CNN.
Other sources have also said that Graham’s arm was used to cover the size of her leg. “I chose to pose like that,” she said according to US Magazine, “No one told me to do anything.” Online, people have reprimanded the lack of diversity in the skin tones and the very common sight of Jenner and Hadid in magazines, stated USA Today.
“Many Asian models now have incredible recognition and success at home first, and then they start booking jobs internationally,” said Wen according to CNN, “I think this stems, in part, from the rise of social media, which is connecting societies… and changing all of our perspectives.”
Although the March issue has collected backlash and criticism, the magazine has still continued to sell on stands and in store.
