Students can take advantage and still earn community service hours during the pandemic.

Serving the community is important but with the pandemic, it has been difficult to earn community service hours. With communities closed and schools only welcoming students two times a week, there are few opportunities for students to take advantage of.

Recently, the district has changed the high school graduation requirements for community service due to the Covid-19 pandemic. The new requirements for community service hours include 0 hours (seniors), 10 hours (juniors), 20 hours (sophomores) and 30 hours (freshman). Although it seems like a long time, four years go by in a blink of an eye, so it’s very important to get started on community service early.

Listed below are a few ways to help serve your community while social distancing, of course!

Meals on Wheels

Despite the Covid-19 restrictions, Meals on Wheels is still operating. Now more than ever, it is important that the sick and elderly stay safe at home. Meals on Wheels is an organization dedicated to addressing senior hunger and isolation. Volunteers are to drive and deliver meals on an assigned local route consisting of 8-12 homes/apartment complexes. Not only is it enjoyable to drive through local neighborhoods, but also to be greeted by the seniors’ loving smiles.

Dog Shelters

According to the ASPCA, 6.5 million companion animals enter U.S. animal shelters nationwide every year. Now more than ever, local shelters need the community’s assistance. No-sew blankets are a fun activity that can earn you plenty of service hours. Materials include fleece and scissors and are super easy to make. Donating pee pads, leashes, beds and more can also be a way to earn community service hours. Each dog shelter has different needs, so be sure to check in with your local shelter to ensure they’re accepting donations.

School Clubs

Joining a club on campus is something that we’re all familiar with. A few clubs that offer community service opportunities are Interact Club and National Honors Society. Whether it’s helping make cards for senior citizens or tutoring fellow students, these clubs provide stimulating activities that can be done from the comforts of your own home. You can even earn community service hours by attending the general Zoom meetings every few months!
