LA Rams’ Debut
Rams finally settle for LA for the first time since 1951, after representing Cleveland, LA and St. Louis in prior seasons. Since the announcement of the decision, a new outbreak of 12th man pride has spread amongst sports fans in Southern California
The Rams made their preseason debut on Aug. 13 against the Dallas Cowboys, winning 28-24. The rest of their preseason consisted equally of both victories and losses. Opening their regular season, the Rams lost to the San Francisco 49ers 0-28, proving a continued search for team dynamics. Despite the loss in week one, fans welcomed the team at the LA Memorial Coliseum and they ultimately came out on top in a 9-3 victory against the Seattle Seahawks.
According to ESPN, Rams linebacker Alec Ogletree, in his fourth season said, “We got them to go for a couple of false starts, it was loud in there, hard for them to hear. As long as I’ve been a Ram, we’ve never had the crowd be like that, like it was today.’’
Fans not only witnessed a victory, but also a historical debut as the Olympic torch was lit above a row of six Rams Hall of Famers who were dressed in their Rams jackets. The group consisted of Jackie Slater, Tom Mack, Eric Dickerson, Orlando Pace, Marshall Faulk and Jack Youngblood. With the exception of Faulk and Pace who played in St. Louis, the other four legends had all played in Los Angeles before.
It was odd that the reason for filling seats in the Coliseum wasn’t for USC, but the Rams home opener versus Seattle surely foreshadowed what the league can expect from the LA Rams and their 12th man.
