Highlighting Students in The Aztlan: Gabe Puertas

Alicia Dunn, Editor

A highlight on sophomore Gabe Puertas as first semester comes to a close.

Everyone has their own struggles and hardships, but Gabe’s most notable one in his own words would have to be school because “it’s hard.” School brings on a multitude of assignments, stress, and unexpected issues that have an infamous reputation of overwhelming students. For example, Gabe recounts school over an accumulation of these hardships have made him feel stressed and especially “tiresome.” Gabe’s biggest challenge in life being school, which is something many people can relate to, however he has fortunately overcome this challenge.

Like other students, Gabe has improved how school affects him by “getting [his] assignments done on time and making sure [he’s] on himself making sure [he’s] doing what [he] needs to do”. For example, he has been taking note of the assignments he currently has and upcoming assignments as well in a planner, paying attention more in class, engaging more in class, and actively trying not to procrastinate so he can finish his assignments and stay on top of them. Through the fruits of his accumulated valiant efforts throughout these past few years in school, he has something to show for it. When asked what Gabe’s biggest accomplishment is, he would have to say “getting honor roll”. This is because as covered previously, he has a history of succumbing to school’s inevitable hardships, but managing to get back on his feet and have an award to show proof of his progress is amazing.

It must be noted however, that this process was not easy, which makes the award much more meaningful. Gabe notes that this accomplishment is most meaningful to him because it shows “[his] hard work paid off.” These efforts on the other hand, would not have been able to occur without inspiration. Gabe’s biggest inspirations would have to be his “past language arts teachers” and “[his] mom” because they have always been there to inspire and support him in his laborious efforts that have been presented to him from time to time.

A big way Gabe has improved his academic life the past few years has been through creating and maintaining a healthy work-life balance. This balance is essential to anyone in life, and to figure it out as much as you can from a young age is not only highly efficient for the individual but inspiring to others as well. Gabe maintains this equilibrium in his work-life balance “by having a schedule doing school work” and then “after that [he’ll] do what he needs to do in [his] personal life” to maintain the healthy balance.

One would think passions would reside in his work-life balance but the situation is different for Gabe. He expressed that “[he] doesn’t really have any passions” at the moment. However, that could easily change in the near future. Adolescents are in their prime trying to figure out what they like and who they are as a person during this time in their life, so it’s no surprise he’s figuring it out right now too. However, he does have interest in some sports, which could potentially grow into a passion as he progresses through his life. In Gabe’s spare time he “likes to play baseball, basketball, and football”. One of these activities he does in his spare time could easily sprout into a serious future passion of his.

Gabe’s inspiring story would probably leave the audience wanting to know more about his philosophies that helped him progress efficiently and successfully in not only school, but his life as well. Gabe, in a few words, would like to leave the audience with advice for them. He strongly urges people to “never give up” because you need to learn how to overcome your hardships and see the fruits of your labor grow exponentially.
