Recently in Yorba Linda, many may have noticed the drastic increase in gas prices. Though gas prices are increasing all over the country, California is currently the leader for the most expensive gas in the country, with an average of $5.34 (AAA).

There are a few reasons for this sudden increase in price, one of them being inflation within the US that has been going on for some time. Another reason is the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Sanctions that the US and the European Union have put on Russia have severely impacted Russia’s ability to sell crude oil, creating an incredible imbalance between supply and demand.

Since Russia is the world’s third largest producer of oil, many leaders in the West initially did not want to ban their exports. However, Russia’s prolonged invasion of Ukraine made those leaders change their minds in order to hurt Russia. “Since Putin began his military buildup at Ukrainian borders, just since then, the price of the gas at the pump in America went up 75 cents,” President Biden said on Tuesday. “I’m going to do everything I can to minimize Putin’s price hike here at home.”

Because of the sudden increase in price, many people have considered buying electric cars, as those do not use gas. This is a smart idea, but because of the increase in demand, the prices for these cars will likely be going up very soon. One may also consider walking to more places instead of driving, which would definitely be a cheaper alternative.

However you may choose to spend less money on gas, make sure to drive safe Aztecs!
