Here is an interview I did with Varsity’ men’s basketball player Nick Sosa before a match between El Modena High School that will take place on Friday, January 9th, 2026. Your Aztecs will also be playing at Intuit Dome on Monday, January 12th, against Canyon High School. Be sure to come on out and support!! We talked about many different topics including how the season has been so far, one skill he’s worked hard to improve on, how he balances academics with basketball, and much more! A huge thank you to Nick for taking the time to chat with us and best of luck on Friday and Monday!!!
How has the season been so far and what challenges have you guys faced?
“The season has been off to a great start, we’re 18-1 so far, and I think that has to do with our chemistry and our willingness to work hard every day, and we faced a lot of challenges like staying consistent and listening to our coach.”
What’s one skill you’ve worked hard to improve?
“One skill I’ve worked hard to improve is to like push others and be a leader on the team and make sure and, like, hold everyone accountable.”
What does a typical practice look like for you?
“So first we get warm and we take a couple laps and we do a couple stretches, and we get some shots we get a lot of shots up, then we listen to our coach, it depends Sometimes we do different kinds of plays or just different kinds of work.”
Who is a leader on your team, and why?
“One is probably Alex Van Otterloo, he’s one of our best players, and he keeps us very focused and, like, makes sure we pay attention to the little details, he is a role model for us.”
How do you balance academics with basketball?
“That’s pretty hard but, you just try to keep academics first and then athletics after, and make sure you try to get all your schoolwork done after practice or before practice, our coaches really understand if you need any help, we could take some time off practice and get some work done.”
Best advice for anyone looking to play in high school?
“Any advice I would give is to just have fun and enjoy the moment because at the end of the day it’s just high school basketball and you should make the most of it as you can.”
