Trump Steps Away From Transgender Bathroom Issue

Michael Toyos weighs in on the transgender bathroom debate.

Fairly recently, our commander-in-chief repealed laws put in place by the Obama administration that allowed transgender people to use the bathroom with which gender they identify.

With this repeal, Trump is leaving the hot-button issue up to the states. Each individual state can either continue to follow what Obama set into place or adopt their own regulations.

For example, the state of California has kept the previous guidelines, but states like Texas, which have been opposed to the laws since Obama first proposed them, are now placing regulations.

At its core, this entire situation is an argument between the rights of an individual and the rights of a state. In some places the rights of the individual will have to be backed by the federal government because the state has a less progressive or accepting mindset.

I personally believe that the rights of the individual are more important than the rights of the state, especially when that right would not lead to to any real negative repercussions on the society as a whole. We’re talking about bathrooms here. Just let the people use the bathroom.

With Trump repealing these laws, he is just delaying the inevitable. Sooner or later these laws will be reinstated. With the way people are moving in this society and how each generation becomes more and more comfortable with the previously taboo, it’s only a matter of time.
