Is the justice system just? Brynn Radak looks at Brock Turner’s early release from jail.

Brock Turner has been released from prison just three months after his rape of a college student and claiming he did nothing wrong.

Turner was indicted on January 28, 2015, on five charges: two for rape, two for felony sexual assault, and one for attempted rape. He was arraigned on February 2, 2015, pleading not guilty on all five charges. On October 7, 2015, after reviewing the results of DNA tests, the two rape charges were dropped by prosecutors. The trial began on March 14, 2016, and concluded on March 30, 2016, with Turner’s conviction on the three remaining charges of felony sexual assault. The convictions carried a potential sentence of 14 years in prison. Prosecutors recommended six years in prison while probation officials recommended a “moderate” county jail sentence. On June 2, 2016, Santa Clara County Superior Court Judge sentenced Turner to six months confinement in the Santa Clara County jail to be followed by three years of probation. He was also ordered to register as a sex offender and participate in a sex offender rehabilitation program.

Turner should be put back in prison. The idea that someone can rape but get away with it because they are white and rich is not something we should be putting in young people’s minds. {If they let him out, they will need to let out every rapist, but that would just get us tons of rapists walking the street. }

If you think putting him in prison for three months taught him a lesson, you are wrong. Teenage boys with money will continue to learn nothing until he is really locked up. People everywhere need to know that rape is not allowed and there is no excuse for it even if you say “it was a mistake.”

Turner’s parents have said that they are worried for the safety of their child which has caused everyone to basically laugh in their faces, retaliating with questions about how they think the girl he raped felt. This poor girl is probably even more terrified now knowing that her rapist, the person she sent to prison, is now out and wandering the streets like nothing ever happened.

What he did should ruin his life, especially because he didn’t really spend any prison time. However, people will still hire him, he will probably write a book one day and maybe even do some talk shows about how his rape was just a mistake.
