Hidden History of Esperanza Volleyball

Hidden History of Esperanza Volleyball

Esperanza’s men’s and Women’s volleyball teams have many CIF championships. The Men’s team has 6 CIF championships from the years 93, 97, 02, 07, 13, and 14. Mr. Owens who is also a history teacher at Esperanza led the boys to the championship victory in the years 2002, 2007, 2013, and 2014. Mr Owens also coached women’s volleyball bringing home 3 CIF champions in the years 2003, 2005, and 2019. He resigned from coaching high school volleyball after his 2020 season. Going back to men’s volleyball in 2002 the school won its 3rd CIF title with the help of their star player Tyler Rex. He was the setter and led his team to victory in the championships. Tyler Rex is now the Head coach of the Men’s volleyball team at Esperanza leading the boys toward their first CIF championship. Tyler was named CIF player of the year back in 02 and went on to play college at Irvine Valley College, Where he also helped the Lasers to win a State Championship and was named California State Player of the Year for JC. The future looks bright for the young men and women still in the program trying to add more CIF championships under the Esperanza belt, and with the amazing coaches and athletes, Esperanza has it is more than possible.
