Election Day can be a stressful day for most Americans, and since most are not given the day off of work, some people find it difficult to cast their vote for their country. This idea allows the thought that Election Day should be a federal holiday.

A majority of US states have voter leave laws. The law allows a person to leave their job and have a small amount of time of to vote. Not all states have this law, and with some people not voting because of it, votes are at stake. Currently, no federal laws mandate that employees get a day off to cast their vote.

In recent elections, about 60 percent of people eligible to vote do so during presidential election years. Forty percent of the people vote during midterm elections with a lower turnout for an odd year, primary, or local election. This means that sometimes less than half the eligible voters don’t vote. Only 72 percent of the voting-age population were registered in 2004. If Election Day was a federal day off the percent could be increased, Slate reported.

Most states require a person to vote near their homes and if that person works far away from their home, it can be hard for them to travel to the designated polling station in time. With the first Tuesday (after the first Monday) in November being Election Day, it can be difficult for people to find time to cast their vote. This is because Voting Day is held on a working weekday.

With Election Day being on a Tuesday and not a federal holiday it is hard to find time off to vote. More countries in the world have their Election Day on a Sunday, such as Brazil, Russia and about 45 more. Behind Sunday, ten countries’ voting day is held on Saturdays. With weekends being the more popular day to hold votings and bigger countries having them on these days, it could be proposed that the United States should follow in their footsteps.

Election Day has been held on a Tuesday since 1845 and the likelihood of this day becoming a federal holiday is slim. America could benefit from a voting day holiday and it could allow many more people in the country to vote and change their future. To try and make Election Day on a different day, they can write a letter to their state’s Congress and Senate members.
