When there is a natural disaster, many evacuation centers do not allow pets. Do you ever wonder what happens to those pets? Some pets can get lost or stranded, but there are other options and places for them to go.

During natural disasters, many pets are sent to shelters if their owner cannot take their pets with them. Because of this, shelters fill up, so some pets get sent to shelters in other parts of the country. Also, some pets are sent to temporary shelters set up by the Red Cross, according to popsci.com.

When the fires took place in Orange County in October 2017, Katella High School and El Modena High School were sheltering animals. Some larger animals that were affected by the fires were moved to the Orange County Fairgrounds, reported ktla.com.

When Hurricane Harvey hit Texas, many organizations helped relocate pets to other states. For example, The Best Friends Network helped move dogs and cats. They moved many pets to places like fairgrounds, arenas, and county shelters.

Many animal rescue organizations like the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) suggest to microchip and register your pet so you can find it if it gets lost during a natural disaster.
