Avery Stowell is all smiles after committing to the Naval Academy for volleyball.

On Feb. 7, Esperanza athletes who will play a sport in college were honored in a ceremony in the quad at break. They signed a “Letter of Intent;” an agreement between a college and the player.

The students honored in this ceremony were Chrys Hildebrand, Savannah Pierce, Jullian Erwin, Jason Fox, Erika Hall, Avery Stowell, Hailey Bosley, Madison Kline, and Isabel Dehakiz.

“We place tables with our media banner behind them, and they bring their letters. We introduce each athlete, and they have their own poster hung in the quad, with their name, sport, and where they are going to college,” said Esperanza’s women’s athletic director Kerri Walters.

Chrys Hildebrand is going to San Jose State University with scholarship for softball. Madison Kline also received a scholarship and is going to North Carolina State University for soccer.
Kline said, “The best part about playing a sport in college is having a full team that are also friends. I’m excited to play the collegiate level.”

Savannah Pierce received a partial scholarship to California State University, San Bernardino for soccer. Hailey Bosley also received a scholarship to Middle Tennessee State University for Softball.

“I think the best part about playing soccer in college is that you automatically have a whole team of friends going into freshman year,” said Pierce.

Bosley said, “Playing for my college’s name and becoming a family with my team is the best part about playing a sport in college.”

“The coaches, parents and family members are invited and all their friends are there, we do a short ‘countdown’ and then they sign their letters,” added Walters. “They take pictures and some coaches will bring flowers. It is a great way to celebrate many years of hard work and practice and a great reward to be able to play their sport at the next level.”
