The women’s golf team has been a swinging success with winning all four teams in the Crestview League. Last year the girls won league and they are expected to win it again.

The girls have won every match except for one, but it was a pre-season match against Fountain Valley. The golf team is also expected to win the North Hills league title again. On top of that, they will compete at the CIF Divisional Tournament on October 30. Their goal is to place in the top half of the field there.

Kevin Claborn, coach of the women’s varsity golf team, stated, “Success is contagious. All we needed to make EHS Golf successful again was a few committed athletes who know what it takes to win. That hard work and ensuing success is observed by the middle and bottom of the ladder, and hopefully they will have the desire to climb. This sport is multifaceted and difficult. There are no short cuts, and it takes dedication to be proficient.”

The women’s junior varsity golf team have also been playing very well this season. Their record so far is 5 and 6. Freshman Kylie Toblesky and Sophomore Annika Patel are on the JV team and both agree that getting to know and bond with their teammates is one of the best things about golf at EHS.

Esperanza played against Yorba Linda on Oct. 5, and the Aztecs took the win with a final score of 224 to 225. Taylor Hunter, Tiffany Skates and Rachel Rhee showed great improvement and were known as being instrumental in this recent victory over the Mustangs.

On Tuesday Oct. 17 and Wednesday Oct. 18, the League Finals Tournament took place at Dad Miller Golf Course in Anaheim on Oct. 17 and 18. Since golf is a sport which requires a lot of individual performance, results from that decides who gets to go to individual CIF. Esperanza’s golf team had two girls qualify last year and currently got all six girls to qualify this year. According to Claborn, varsity already made it to CIF, Oct. 30, as a team but CIF Individual took place on Monday, Oct. 23 in Ojai, CA.

Although only the top 10 girls out of 24 from the North Hills league got to move on to the second day, all six of Esperanza’s players did. “Three girls made it to CIF Individuals – Aide Martinez came in 2nd; Carley Toigo came in 3rd; Tiffany Skates came in 4th. A girl from Brea won by one shot over Aide.”

Outstanding performances have come from senior Carley Toigo and junior Aide Martinez this year. Toigo has consistently led the team to victory this season with six medalist honors and the lowest stroke average of any girl in five years. Martinez has stepped up multiple times and has four medalist honors so far this season.

“But without the amazing efforts and performance of the remaining varsity squad, we would not be poised to win another league championship this year,” stated Claborn.

Avery Hancock is a freshman on this years women’s golf varsity team. She expressed her thoughts about this year’s season by saying, “The season so far for me has been bittersweet, I still need to improve my game and I have so much to learn. Being a freshman on varsity was intimidating at first, but then I got to get to know my team and I feel very comfortable.”

“After a very successful season, including a league championship and an undefeated record in the Century ‘Conference’, we had an amazing showing at League Finals. I am so pleased with the girls’ performance and sportsmanship.  Their hard work paid off in spades, and I look forward to watching them compete at CIF,” stated Claborn.
